The Asparagus Festival

Last April 15th, I went to Cordenons, in the wonderful Piazza della Vittoria, to learn more about the first edition of “Il salotto dell’asparago”. (Literaly translation in English “the Asparagus Lounge”)

An event organized by the City of Cordenons, by the Chamber of Commerce of Pordenone through Pordenone with Love and Pro Cordenons Clap on Clap.

It is an experiential initiative, focused on this magnificent product that has recently obtained also the designation DE.CO, Municipal Denomination. A brand aimed at enhancing local production linked both to food and wine, handicraft and finally to the agri-food sector. As a result, this brand can promote the territory through specific production and also stimulate the local supply of cultural and heritage products.

Cultivation and harvesting

For everyone, the choice to grow this product is due to several factors. First of all because the sandy soils of this area, due to the presence of natural springs, are very fertile and suitable for this crop. Secondly, through the asparagus it is possible to enhance the territory.

The greatest difficulties that these producers encounter, mainly concern the weather conditions because the quality of the product requires daily and manual harvesting. This guarantees to consumers the freshness of the asparagus.

In the kitchen

The asparagus can be used in various ways in the kitchen. First of all, some chefs realized some asparagus pâté paired with smoked trout, others turn it into an infusion to be combined with fiordilatte ice cream or use it as the main ingredient of focaccia, together with smoked ricotta, pitina, smoked bacon or Trieste baked ham.

Also, several wine producers participated in the event. Some driven by the territorial character of it, others because they associate childhood memories with this product.
